It takes three seconds following wakeup from energy conserving mode, but is ready to go promptly. Contrary to previous reviews, I have had no problem with spinning up out of sleep mode. So far, I am delighted with the speed, quiet operation, lack of heat dissipation problems and efficiency. Worked right out of the box on my MacPro because it was formatted correctly. Plugged this 1TB storage device into the Firewire 800 port on my MacPro. Pros: I purchased this item to facilitate Leopard's Time Machine application.
